Who is Mara? Mara is the Sanskrit word for death. In Buddhist texts he is personified as a character who lures people away from the practices that would enable them to escape from the cycle of birth and death. A sworn enemy of the Buddha, the champion of mindfulness, Mara is the champion of mindlessness, heedlessness and carelessness. He currently keeps busy overseeing the activities of a worldwide chain of tabloids and television networks. 2. Aside from the journalism and television industries, does Mara have any other manifestations in the modern world? Although most of his energies are devoted to those areas, he does have enough spare time to oversee a number of other rather minor enterprises in the modern world, such as the educational system. Since education has nearly been eliminated by television, however, Mara devotes less and less of his energy to this quaint vestige of former times known as the university. In earlier times, however, Mara was very busy in the realm of higher education. A few examples will suffice to demonstrate this point. In the winter of 1875, three students from McGill University were playing a game on icy St Urbain street in Montreal. The game consisted of batting a hard rubber ball around with broomsticks. Unfortunately, a heavy draft horse stepped on the rubber ball and flattened it out. One of the students exclaimed ``Our ball is all pucked up.'' Undaunted by this mishap, the students took their pucked up ball and invented a new game, which they called hockey. The game has been used by Mara ever since to distract the minds of Canadian males from anything of real consequence. In the winter of 1891, a recent graduate from McGill took a job as an athletic director in a poor neighbourhood in which the children could not afford ice skates or hockey sticks. The athletic director sat up all night trying to figure out a way to play ice hockey without ice and sticks. After many hours of fruitless planning, he wadded up the sheet of paper on which he was doodling and tossed it into the wastepaper basket. Seeing the wadded paper go into the basket, the athletic director suddenly realized he had just found a suitable substitute for hockey. He called his game wastebasket hockey. When players eventually complained of the difficulty of dribbling a flat puck, it was replaced with a large round ball, and the name of the game was changed to basketball. The game has been used by Mara ever since to distract the minds of USAmerican males from anything of real consequence. In the 1950s a team of researchers at the Allen Institute at McGill University were given a research contract by the United States military to develop techniques for brainwashing captured enemy troops. The researchers developed a synthetic chemical known as lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD, which had the actual effect of shrinking the intellect and expanding the ego but which had the perceived effect of expanding the victim's consciousness. The researchers discovered that sleep deprivation could be combined with a steady diet of LSD to produce a state of permanent disorientation. The advantages of having an entire citizenry made up of dull-witted people who thought they were quite intelligent became immediately apparent to the governments of Canada and the United States. With Mara's help, the new chemical was made widely available, especially to those who resisted the lures of basketball and ice hockey, to distract the minds of both males and females from anything of real consequence. In the 1990s, Mike Rowe Cephalus, a professor of computer science, robotics and artificial intelligence at McGill University, was working on an electronic expert system that would automatically answer e-mail messages. The CXE (Canadian eXpert Engine), which was informally called the Richard Hayes (named after an unknown professor of Sandscript in the Faculty of Kindergarten Studies), was, like its eponym, an utter klutz. But a clone of this system, known as the dreaded CXE Virus (or simply the CXEV), escaped and has been haunting automated discussion groups ever since. Like Mara's other achievements, the CXEV distracts serious scholars from matters of genuine importance. 3. Is there any way of avoiding Mara's evil clutches? You just run off now and read your newspaper or watch a nice hockey game on TV. And if you get bored doing that, then go play e-mail for a couple of hours. Eventually you'll find that all these silly fantasies about Mara will disappear, and you'll realize the whole thing was just another meaningless myth made up by the Big Bad Buddha. Virally yours, The weekend shift at BUDDHA-L ________________________________________________________________________________ 3-Body mods as Art. Taken from the Advertiser, South Australia 9/12/92. ********************* Artist faces up to the ideal look of ancient goddesses SYDNEY: This Is the modern face of mythology, sculpted by plastic surgery for art's sake. [picture omitted] French performance artist Orlan has spared no 'expense and has endured great discomfort to reach her goal. Her bid to create the mythical "Ideal woman" has taken live painful operations. She has changed her face to emulate the goddesses of Greek and Roman, mythology - Diana's eyes, Venus's chin, Psyche's nose and Europa's lips. And she has copied the Mona Lisa's forehead as part of her artistic statement. Orlan, who Is In Sydney to take part In the Biennale exhibition at the NSW Art Gallery said her living art was not a matter of beauty but one of identity. "This Is not about beauty or to appear younger; it is a Com- plete change of of Image," she said. Orlan, 45, said the surgery had changed her appearance, making her unrecognisable rather than more attractive. `` in my view the body is no morer than a bag, a costume or a cover," she said. The focus of Orlan's exhi- bition Is graphic video footage of her transformation. And she remains conscious throughout the delicate surgery so she can play an active role In the remodelling procedure. That Includes decorating the operating theatre and hiring a stylist to costume herself and the surgery team. Throughout the "performance" Orlan directs photographers, cameramen and the rest of the "cut". But she admits the stomach. turning footage Is not for every. one. "To some my work Is revolt. ing, to others revolutionary," she said. Lengthy Project --------------- Orlan's "reincarnation" Is part of a three-year project which will end with a competition among European and American advertising agencies to come up with a new name and pseudonym for her new body. And plans are under way for a sixth operation In New York early next year. Orlan hopes to have her nose made 'longer, straighter and perhaps more masculine". She said she wants to change the stereotype that we have to accept what nature has given us. "Within a few generations, cosmetic surgery will be com- pletely acceptable," she said. ________________________________________________________________________________ 4-COUM ROUTINES FOR THE NEW Y-ERA.... (Dedicated to thee brothers and sisters ov mine E do not know) Routine 1 - Harmony Should we but stare into the sun (this E said to my brothers and sisters), we could be enveloped with an embrace sweeter than any ov a lover... We could be blinded to all, and Live silently with one another, ignorant to thee world outside... But E choose to see your beauty, as it contrasts well with the ugliness that surrounds us. Routine 2 - Conflict Are thee messengers to be destroyed this time? Are thee bearers of thee GIFT not to be trusted? I Be-LIE-ve this is so, for thee WORD still exists in thee minds ov the audience. L-ov-E? Not enough for us this time. Thee friction is almost overpowering. Thee sound is that ov our drums, thee heart ov our tribe beating, and our hearts are not to be silenced so easily. Routine 3 - Reconciliation There is nothing more or less than this; Nothing beside, over or under us now. All E hear is our breathing, and all E can see is beauty in what E once found disgust. TIME has never been so unimportant, but only because it passes like thee waves against your fair skin. Isn't it odd, how much discord can be solved with a simple kiss? L-OV-E and BLISS...... Fr. O.C.Q./Orpheus ________________________________________________________________________________ 5-Thee Sigil Book (Thee Black Book) UK edition, 1988 (excerpts) As we have said, Sigils have a functional purpose: they serve as a direct means to make what you want to happen more likely to happen. Butter they are quite different from systems based on faith and false promises. They cannot guarantee anything; they can only help release thee potential that already exists within. And as it is a system for thee Individual there is no right or wrong way - what is right for one person may be entirely inappropriate for another. Therefore thee method is one that must be developed personally, so that thee Sigil as performed by you is something wholly ov your own making, reflecting your own personalities and experiences. We offer only guidance and encouragement, not instructions and rules to obey. We leave those to thee Controllers, thee ones who seek to generate uniformity ov thought, and who strive to create a passive and compliant populace thinking along rigid and con-ditioned lines, unable to take responsibility for their own lives and actions. We are sickened by thee negative attitudes ov right and wrong that are promulgated in thee mass media: that if you do this you cannot do that; if you think this you cannot think that. It is a system that destroys thee Individual; destroys thee ability to think, to question, to force thee hand ov chance; destroys thee will to live according to who you really are and not according to who they say you are. Sigils break down this con-ditioning, awaken thee possibility ov change and experiment, give back thee joy ov a life rich in experience and challenge. Sigils are as much about learning as anything else. Not only learning thee method that works for you, butter also learning who it is you really are, what it is you really want. A result ov this is that it may take some time before you discover thee method ov working that is best for you, and you may find that thee results ov your Sigils are not as expected. This is not thee result ov getting it wrong, it is thee natural response caused by thee first steps on a road ov discovery. For example, things may not happen in thee order you had expected, or they may take a different form. Thee identity ov thee people involved may be unexpected. Butter if you examine thee results ov your work closely and honestly you will find that these differences - these moves away from thee pre-conceived - reflect thee true aim hidden within thee Sigil, thee underlying qualities ov it. Thee reason for this is that your conscious image is not thee real object ov your desire; thee conscious wish, after all, being subject to thee con-ditioned responses thee Sigil is designed to break down. Thee results are often more expansive than you could have dreamed, more radical than you would have consciously dared hope. Put simply, what you expect is not always what you really want. And what you think you want is not always what you really want. Our concern is with thee Individual in thee modern world. Accordingly our methods are designed to meet thee circumstances that prevail today. They are not Occult in thee way that word is usually understood, only thee intuitive use ov that which we already know directed with purpose. It is a maximization ov thee powers ov thee brain, a joining together ov conscious and unconscious will so that through thee use ov Sigils thee Individual can move towards a desired goal free from thee constraint ov confused ideals and personal contradictions. Unlike much that is called Occult we do not rely on dogma, mystification, references to orthodoxy, or thee mimicking ov previously effective butter now redundant rituals rules and experiences. We believe that thee strength needed is already living in each ov us. It is simply that we need to tune in to thee right channels, see clearly, and act on that vision. And that vision must be fiercely personal, not thee dictate ov some other who tries to impose their will on thee Individual, or some corporate view that leaves nothing to chance and tells us that dissent from thee common ground is a sin. ________________________________________________________________________________ 6-thee 23rd ov decembre by marquis de Sade [an excerpt from thee 150 complex passions; as related in 120 days ov Sodom] thee 23rd ov decembre 110.
